Hero MotoCorp Stretches Sales Lead Over Honda as Vida EV Hits 150,000 Milestone
Hero MotoCorp has increased its lead over Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India during the 2026 financial year. The company reported total domestic sales of 6.07 million units, while Honda sold 5.75 million units. This result stretches the gap between the two rivals to more than 310,000 units. This is a big jump from the 280,000-unit difference seen in the previous year. Hero saw an 8.1% growth rate by relying on rural motorcycle demand and its new electric vehicles. These numbers show that Hero is still the top choice in the domestic market.
Vida EV Hits a Major Milestone
A big reason for Hero’s success is the performance of its electric brand, Vida. In FY26, Vida sales reached 150,000 units. This is a massive increase from its earlier years. The first 100,000 units took nearly three years to sell, but the next 100,000 took just eight months.
By March 2026, Vida held a 10.3% market share in the electric scooter space. Honda stayed at the bottom of the electric market, with sales for the Activa e and QC1 models below 10,000 units total.
Comparing The Market Drivers
Hero stayed strong because of its entry-level motorcycles in the sub-125cc category. Better rural sentiment and tax changes helped sell millions of low-cost models like the Splendor. Honda had a tougher time because its lead in the petrol scooter market faced new pressure.
The overall scooter market grew to 8.12 million units, but Honda’s share fell to 39% from 41.5%. Hero took advantage of this shift and grew its own scooter share to 7.1% during the same period.
What to Expect in FY27
The rivalry will likely get even tighter in the next financial year. Honda plans to launch more electric models to catch up. Hero is also getting ready with the Vida Z series to target customers who want scooters under Rs 1 lakh. When looking at global numbers, the race is very close with Hero at 6.47 million total units and Honda at 6.37 million.
However, Hero remains the king of the Indian market for now by focusing on both petrol bikes and a top-five electric brand. Both companies are now building more charging stations to win over new buyers.
